What a visit to Montañas del Fuego involves

Montañas del Fuego is the visitor area of Timanfaya National Park, on the Islote de Hilario. CACT Lanzarote, which runs it, lists entry from 9:00 to 15:45 every day, “365 days a year”. 15:45 is the last entry, not the closing time, and the visit takes about 90 minutes. Until at least the end of August 2026 the first entry was 9:30, so check your ticket.

Since June 2026 tickets are sold online only, for a set date and entry time. There is no ticket office at the gate, no waiting area, and a ticket used outside its slot is no longer valid. CACT does not change or refund tickets. In October 2026 the adult ticket cost €30 and a child aged 7 to 12 €15, with children under 7 free. The ticket covers parking, the geothermal area and the Volcano Route.

The visit has two parts. On the hilltop at the Islote de Hilario, staff pour water into a borehole and it erupts as steam, and dry brush catches fire in a shallow pit; El Diablo restaurant grills over the heat from the ground. Then a coach takes you round the Volcano Route, about 12 to 14 km and 35 to 45 minutes depending on the source, with recorded commentary. Nobody may leave the coach, and nobody may walk freely in the park.

If you drive yourself, you stay in your car from the barrier at El Taro to the car park, with no stopping. Before timed tickets, car queues on the LZ-67 at Easter and in July 2025 made the local news, and in June 2026 Canarias7 reported that the timed slots were reducing them. On a tour, the park entry and the slot are part of the fare: the half-day Timanfaya and La Geria tour gives about 75 minutes in the park, and the two-hour express from Yaiza suits drivers who would rather park in the village.

Choosing the month for a wider Lanzarote trip

If you are still choosing dates for Lanzarote as a whole, May and June are particularly comfortable: highs average about 26 to 27°C at Lanzarote Airport, rain is rare, and Montañas del Fuego had its smallest crowds of 2025 in those two months. October is similar in warmth, at about 27.5°C, although the first showers of the winter usually start. July to September are the hottest months, and August has about 11 days reaching 30°C. From November to March, highs of about 22 to 25°C make for comfortable walking, with two or three rainy days a month.

None of this changes the visit much. The coach is the same in January and August, and the craters look the same. What the month changes is how warm the open hilltop feels, how windy the viewpoints are and how many people are booked into the slots around yours.

Heat, wind and calima

Lanzarote Airport, on the coast near Arrecife, is the nearest official station with long-term averages. It is a reference, not the park: the Islote de Hilario is inland and higher, and its viewpoints are more exposed to the wind.

A rainy day here means 1 mm of rain or more. Lanzarote gets about 100 mm of rain in a year, so even the wettest months, November to February, have only two or three rainy days. Rain rarely affects a visit.

Heat matters more. August highs average about 30°C at the airport, so on most August days the outdoor demonstrations are warm and a hat and water help. July is the windiest month, with an average wind of about 31 km/h at the airport, because the trade winds blow almost all summer. Travellers on a June 2026 tour found it “extremely cold and windy at the viewpoint”, so bring a windproof layer even in summer.

Calima is haze from Saharan dust. It can blur the long views across the craters and raise the temperature. An AEMET study of dust events in the Canary Islands from 1980 to 2022 found that an episode lasts about 1.8 days on average and that the longest episodes come in January and February. It can still arrive in any season, so check the forecast a few days before your visit.

How busy it gets

Montañas del Fuego counted about 823,000 visitors in 2025. August was the busiest month, at about 90,000, and May the quietest, at about 56,000, with June next at about 61,000. Every other month had between about 65,000 and 75,000. That is one year’s count, so treat it as a guide to the pattern rather than a forecast.

The island’s own busiest months are different. In 2025 Lanzarote received the most tourists in March, about 326,000, and the fewest in September, about 253,000, but the visitor area still peaked in August. The two counts measure different things: arrivals on the island, and people through the gate at Montañas del Fuego.

Since June 2026, tickets are sold against a daily capacity, so in the busiest months book your slot as soon as your dates are fixed, especially for August and the Easter holidays.

Time of day

The national park’s website suggests arriving between 9:00 and 10:30 or after 13:30. A CACT chart of visitor numbers by hour, published in January 2025 before timed tickets, showed the late morning as the busiest time and 15:00 to 16:00 as the quietest. On a hot day, the first morning slots are also the coolest.

Choose the slot that fits the rest of your day. A morning entry leaves the afternoon free for El Golfo, the salt pans at Janubio or the beach; an afternoon entry suits a morning in the north at Jameos del Agua. The last entry is at 15:45 in every month. On a coach tour, the operator sets the time.

The evening tour with a volcano dinner goes in after the day’s visitors have left, with the demonstrations, the Volcano Route and dinner cooked over the heat from the ground. It suits a hot summer day. The operator says it gets cold on the crater field after sunset, so bring a warm layer.

Volcano hikes and the free park walks

You cannot walk freely in the national park, but there are two ways to go on foot.

The park runs free guided walks, the Tremesana route from Yaiza and a coastal route from El Golfo, in Spanish or English. They are booked online on the national parks’ reservation site, no more than a month ahead, for groups of up to eight people aged 16 and over, and they can be cancelled when a weather warning is in force. The park advises booking 25 to 30 days ahead.

Private guided hikes run in the neighbouring Los Volcanes Natural Park, outside the national park. They take about three hours on loose volcanic rock, and the heat matters more here than on the coach. The trek in the Timanfaya eruption natural park starts around 17:00 in June and 14:30 in December, following the sunset, and the guided volcano hike with transfers includes pickup. From November to March the lower temperatures suit a longer walk.

Daylight barely limits a visit to Montañas del Fuego, because the last entry is at 15:45 in every month. It matters for the hikes, which some guides time around the sunset.

Booking and cancelling

Tickets bought directly from CACT are for one date and entry time and cannot be changed or refunded. The tours on this page can be cancelled free up to 24 hours before the start, so you can book once your dates are fixed and check the forecast for heat, wind and calima before the cancellation deadline. Moving to another day depends on there being space on it.
