Lanzarote: Hike Across Timanfaya's Volcanic Landscapes

About This Experience

This is a walk, not a coach ride, and it is worth being precise about where it goes: the route crosses the lava the 1730–36 eruptions laid down inside the Los Volcanes Natural Park, the protected area that wraps around Timanfaya National Park. It does not enter the National Park itself and it does not use the Ruta de los Volcanes — those are the coach tours. What it offers instead is time on the ground, on foot, in country the coaches drive past.

The route runs about 9 kilometres at a deliberately unhurried pace over roughly three hours. You cross open lava fields, climb to viewpoints over the cones and get close enough to the craters to see the internal structure — the kind of looking that a coach window does not permit. The guide handles the geology as you go: which flow came from which vent, why the vegetation returns so slowly, what the different lava textures mean.

Snacks are included and hotel transfers can be added when booking. The footing is rough volcanic rock throughout, so this needs closed shoes and a moderate level of fitness — it is easy in gradient, but not in surface.
