Lanzarote: Timanfaya Park, Jameos Agua, & Cueva Verdes Tour

About This Experience

This is the one full day that strings together all three of Lanzarote's geological headliners, and it is built around the part of Timanfaya you cannot reach any other way. The Ruta de los Volcanes — the road that loops through the crater field — is closed to private vehicles and open only to the park's own coaches with an official guide aboard. Your fare covers that entry and the coach slot — which since Timanfaya went to online-only, timed-entry ticketing matters more than it used to, because the slots are finite and peak-season dates go early.

At the Islote de Hilario the guides run the geothermal demonstrations: brush dropped into a shallow pit that catches alight on ground heat alone, and water poured into a borehole that comes back seconds later as a column of steam. From there the coach follows the 100-minute route through lava fields and cones left by the 1730–36 eruptions, with commentary at the viewpoints where the colours shift from black to red to ochre.

The afternoon moves underground and then into art. Cueva de los Verdes is a guided 55-minute walk through one of the world's longest lava tubes, formed by the La Corona volcano and running out beneath the sea, with chambers reaching 40 metres high. The day closes at Jameos del Agua, César Manrique's conversion of a collapsed section of the same tube into a concert hall, restaurant and lagoon — home to the rare white blind crabs, which is why swimming there is prohibited.

Good to Know & Caveats

• The Volcano Route is closed to private cars, and park entry is now sold online with a timed slot rather than at the gate — this fare covers both.
• The ground at the Islote de Hilario is uneven and loose in places; closed-toe trainers are strongly recommended.
• Pickup changes are only possible more than 24 hours before departure. Inside that window you are reassigned to a central meeting point.
• There may be a logistics stop at Yaiza while passengers are sorted between coaches by language.
• Cueva de los Verdes is not accessible to visitors with reduced mobility — the underground route has steps and uneven footing throughout.
• Swimming in the Jameos del Agua lagoon is strictly prohibited to protect the blind crab colony.
• Check WhatsApp the day before: the operator sends your pickup point and time.
• Cruise passengers should note the tour ends around 19:00–19:30.
